Roeland de Bruin reacts to the Böhmermann Case in Trouw

In the Dutch newspaper Trouw, Roeland de Bruin reacts to the prosecution of the German comedian Jan Böhmerman and the recent injunction of his poem on the Turkish president Erdogan.

Roeland de Bruin discusses the question if Jan Böhmermann would have been prosecuted as well in the Netherlands: ‘In the Netherlands, freedom of speech is very important. The same applies to the protection of satire.’ Therefore it is nog clear if Dutch comedians should be more aware as well. After the discussion of possible criminal consequences, Roeland de Bruin emphasizes his surprise abour the recent Böhmermann judgement: ‘Of course it always comes as a surprise if the freedom of speech is limited.’
